Sandringham covers expensive bayside real estate south of the city, from Sandringham south to Beaumaris and east through Cheltenham to the Nepean Highway. It was created in 1955 and only ever won by Labor when John Cain came to power in 1982, although it was left marginal following a 9.0 per cent swing in 2002. Murray Thompson (left) has held the seat since 1992, receiving his first parliamentary appointments after the 2002 election and currently holding the position of Shadow Housing and Aboriginal Affairs Minister. Labor's candidate is Noel Pullen (right), a surprise winner in the upper house province of Higinbotham at the 2002 election (by a margin of 0.3 per cent) who has had to try his luck here after failing to win a seat on the Southern Metropolitan upper house ticket.
