Preston covers suburbs in Melbourne's inner north, including Reservoir and Ruthven. Its status as a safe seat goes back to its creation in 1945. Labor's Michael Leighton is retiring after 18 years as member; in his place Labor has nominated one of his staffers, Robin Scott (right), who like Leighton is a member of the Labor Unity faction. Others mentioned as potential candidates included Darebin councillor Alison Donohoe and Labor Unity convenor Fiona Richardson, the latter of whom has since been accommodated in Northcote.
