Murray Valley includes Wangaratta and other country territory immediately south of the Murray River, from Numurkah east to Rutherglen. It has been held by the National/Country Party since its creation in 1945, by Bolte-era party leader George Moss until 1973; by William Baxter until 1976 (who returned as a member for the upper house province of North Eastern in 1978, and will contest Benambra at the coming election); and thereafter by Ken Jasper (right). It had earlier been reported that Jasper was expected to retire at the coming election, and that the Nationals were concerned at their ability to hold the seat without him.
