Kilsyth is located in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs and was created at the 2002 election upon the abolition of Mooroolbark, which Lorraine Elliott had held for the Liberals since its creation in 1992. Elliott was defeated in her bid to win the successor seat following a 12.7 per cent swing that was savage even by the standards of the 2002 election. The winning Labor candidate was Dympna Beard (left), a school teacher and taxi business operator. The Liberals have nominated former Yarra Ranges mayor David Hodgett (right), who won preselection ahead of four rival candidates including Wendy Smith, a former front-bencher who lost her upper house seat of Silvan at the 2002 election.
