Wright was created in 1993 to accommodate burgeoning residential developments in Adelaide's north-east. It covers recently developed Gulfview Heights; parts of Greenwith, Golden Grove and Wynn Vale, which were established in 1985 and developed through the 1990s; and the more established, lower-income Salisbury East in the western part of the electorate. The Salisbury East area is of a piece with the neighbouring ultra-safe Labor electorates of Ramsay and Playford, whereas the heavily mortgaged remainder helped keep Makin in the blue column throughout the Howard years, while recording massive Labor swings of around 14 per cent at the 2006 state election. The redistribution has slightly amended the south-western boundary to incorporate the entirety of Gulfview Heights, adding about 200 voters and cutting 0.1 per cent from the Labor margin. Naturally a Labor seat, Wright was nonetheless won by the Liberals when it debuted in the landslide election of 1993, when Scott Ashenden defeated Labor's Trish White (who would enter parliament the following year in Taylor). Jennifer Rankine won the seat for Labor with a 3.1 per cent margin when the pendulum swung back in 1997, achieving a status quo result in 2002 and a 12.1 per cent swing in 2006. Rankine was promoted to parliamentary secretary in 2004 and to cabinet after the 2006 election, taking on the consumer affairs, state/local government relations, status of women, volunteers and early childhood development portfolios. She came under fire in early 2008 when four of her ministerial staff quit in quick succession, with talk that others had given notice. Despite her lack of factional alignment, her position at the looming reshuffle was said to be safe due to backing from Rann, and she was in fact promoted with an move to families and communities, housing, ageing and disability and the newly created northern suburbs portfolio. The Liberal candidate is Tina Celeste, a specialist teacher and chairperson of the Greenwith Primary School governing council. PREDICTION: Labor retain | ||
