Goyder consists of the Yorke Peninsula plus part of the Gulf St Vincent coastal area on the opposite (eastern) side. The redistribution has transferred the southern part of coastal Barunga West District Council at the base of the peninsula to Frome. Lacking a major population centre, the electorate's farms and small towns have made the seat reliable for the conservatives since it was created in 1970, although it was held by Liberal Movement and independent members from 1974 to 1982. John Meier, a Liberal member of 24 years, retired at the 2006 election and was succeeded by Yorke Peninsula Council chief executive Steven Griffiths, who won preselection over South Australian Farmers Federation president John Lush. Griffiths' rapid rise through the ranks brought him to the deputy leadership and Shadow Treasurer position when Isobel Redmond took charge in July 2009. He had entered shadow cabinet immediately after the election as Shadow Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education, which he exchanged for economic development and industry and trade in September 2008, further acquiring small business in April 2009. When Redmond's elevation made the deputy leadership vacant (she had taken the job from Vickie Chapman a week previously after the latter's unsuccessful leadership bid), Griffiths won the ensuing vote over MacKillop MP Mitch Williams eight votes to six. Shortly after the spill, Christian Kerr wrote in the Sunday Mail that consideration had been given to installing Griffiths as a compromise leadership candidate. PREDICTION: Liberal retain | ||
