Yeerongpilly covers inner suburbs about six kilometres south of central Brisbane, from Fairfield and Annerley south to Salisbury. The redistribution has transferred 3100 voters in the southernmost region of Coopers Plains to Sunnybank, while expanding the electorate east into Tarragindi (taking 3500 voters from Greenslopes) and north into Fairfield (taking 1800 voters from South Brisbane). The electorate was created in 2001 in place of abolished Yeronga, which was held by the Liberals from its creation in 1950 until Matt Foley won it for Labor in 1989. Foley secured Labor's hold with swings of 7.9 per cent in 1998 and 8.7 per cent in 2001, before retiring in 2004. His successor was Simon Finn, a party organiser associated with the Left. Finn did well to win preselection on the strength of branch support ahead of another member of the Left, Australian Manufacturing Workers Union state secretary Dave Harrison, who had the backing of Peter Beattie.
