Stafford covers inner Brisbane suburbs about five kilometres north of the city, from Alderley and Grange north to Chermside and Stafford Heights. The redistribution has reoriented the electorate south-westwards, adding Alderley and Grange from Brisbane Central and Ashgrove and transferring Chermside and Glen Kedron to Nudgee and Clayfield in the east. The electorate was called Kedron from 1950 to 1972 and again from 1992 to 2001, and has been in Labor hands since 1951. Terry Sullivan became the member in 2001, having previously been the member for Nundah (1991 to 1992) and Chermside (1992 to 2001). He retired in 2006 and was succeeded by Stirling Hinchliffe, former staffer to Speaker Ray Hollis and member of the Labor Forum faction. Hinchliffe was promoted to parliamentary secretary immediately after the election, currently serving in the infrastructure and planning portfolios.
