Morayfield is a new electorate created to accommodate growth in Brisbane's northern outskirts. It can more properly be considered as a continuation of the seat of Kallangur, from which it takes 20,309 of its 28,145 voters. Kallangur itself maintains only 12,156 of its existing voters, having been reoriented southwards. As well as the Burpengary and Morayfield area previously in Kallangur, the electorate takes 7400 voters at Caboolture South from Pumicestone to the north, along with semi-rural territory from Kurwongbah further to the west. Labor preselection for the new seat loomed as a battle between Carolyn Male of Labor Forum, whose existing seat of Glass House had been made extremely precarious by the redistribution, and 25-year-old lawyer Mark Ryan of the Left. The impasse was resolved when Linda Lavarch agreed not to contest the election, making Pine Rivers (successor to Lavarch's abolished seat of Kurwongbah) available to Male.
