Lytton covers the Wynnum-Manly area south of the Brisbane River mouth, about 10 kilometres east of the city. The redistribution has added 2800 voters from Tingalpa at the inland southern end, previously in Chatsworth. Lytton was created from traditional Labor territory at the 1972 election and has had only two members: Tom Burns, who was Opposition Leader from 1974 to 1978 and Deputy Premier in the Wayne Goss government, and Paul Lucas, who succeeded Burns when he retired shortly after Labor lost office in February 1996. After a fairly slow start, Lucas has enjoyed a rapid rise since his promotion to Innovation and Information Economy Minister after the 2001 election. A further promotion to the senior portfolios of transport and main roads followed the 2004 election, and he made the leap to the deputy premiership when Peter Beattie departed in September 2007. He achieved this by outpointing Logan MP John Mickel to win the backing of the Labor Forum faction, which Anna Bligh had courted to secure her hold on the leadership from her minority position in the Left. Lucas also exchanged his ministerial portfolios at this time for infrastructure and planning.
