Located roughly 25 kilometres north of the central Brisbane, Kallangur was created with the introduction of one-vote one-value in 1992. It has been dramatically redrawn by the redistribution, leaving it with fewer voters from Kallangur as previously constituted than the new seat of Morayfield immediately to the north. The changes have pushed the electorate to the south, exchanging Burpengary and Morayfield for territory along the western side of Bruce Highway as far Murrumba Downs, taking 15,000 voters in roughly equal measure from Murrumba and Kurwongbah. It has been held at all times by Labor's Ken Hawyard, who survived relatively close shaves when the 1995 backlash reduced his margin to 4.0 per cent, and when One Nation overtook the Liberals in 1998 and fell 3.9 per cent short of defeating him on preferences. He is now retiring and has been succeeded as Labor candidate Mary-Anne O'Neill, an official with the Australian Services Union.
