Greenslopes is located in Brisbane's inner south, from Coorparoo south to Mount Thompson. The redistribution has transferred the Tarragindi area west of the Pacific Motorway to Yeerongpilly and a section of Norman Park to Bulimba in the north, respectively accounting for 3500 and 1400 voters, while adding 6000 voters around Mount Thompson from Mount Gravatt in the south. The parties' broader fortunes over the years have been closely shadowed by the results in Greenslopes, such that the electorate is rivalled only by Mansfield as a litmus test seat. The electorate was created in 1960 and held by the Liberals until 1983, when former minister Bill Hewitt became one of many casualties of the electorate's thumbs-down to the Liberal anti-Joh rebellion. The National Party victor, Leisha Harvey, later became Health Minister and was convicted on Fitzgerald-related misappropriation charges following her crushing electoral defeat in 1989. Gary Fenlon subsequently held the seat for Labor, barring the term following his narrow defeat by the Liberals in 1995. Fenlon did not rise to the ministry in either period in parliament, and announced his retirement in mid-February.

Labor's administrative committee worked quickly to deliver preselection to Brisbane barrister Cameron Dick, whose brother Milton Dick is a former state party secretary and current Brisbane City councillor serving Richlands ward.
