The boundaries of the new Sunshine Coast seat of Buderim are neatly defined by the Bruce Highway in the west, the Sunshine Motorway in the east and south and Petrie Creek in the north. It takes three-quarters of its voters (around Buderim and Mountain Creek) from the heavily over quota electorate of Kawana, which has fewer of its original voters after the redistribution than does Buderim. There are also 5700 voters from around Kuluin to the north, previously in Maroochydore, and 900 voters around Rosemount from Nicklin further west. Buderim will be contested for the Liberal National Party by the member for Kawana, Steve Dickson, a former Maroochy Shire councillor who won the seat from Labor's two-term member Chris Cummins amid the Sunshine Coast anti-Labor swing of 2006. Dickson was promoted to the front bench when the Liberal National Party merger took effect in August 2008, as Shadow Workplace and Job Security Minister.
