Algester is located approximately 12 kilometres south of the city, covering Forest Lake, Larapinta and Algester itself to the north of the Logan Motorway, along with Forestdale and Boronia Heights to the south. The redistribution has added 7600 voters at Hillcrest and Boronia Heights in the south-east from Logan. The creation of the new seat of Sunnybank and consequent rearrangement have cost it territory in the north, around Acacia Ridge (7300 voters to Sunnybank), Doolandella to the west (3800 voters to Inala), and Calamvale in the east (2400 voters to Stretton). The electorate was created in 2001 in place of Archerfield, which had been a safe Labor seat since its creation in 1972. Karen Struthers was elected to Archerfield in 1998 and added 12.5 per cent to the notional two-party margin in Algester in 2001, suffering a mild correction in 2004 before a status quo result in 2006. A member of the Left faction, Struthers has served in various parliamentary secretary positions since February 2004. In September 2007 she was fined and disqualified for driving after pleading guilty to drink driving while using her government car, prompting Peter Beattie to indicate she would have to wait several years before being considered for further promotion.
