Murrumba was created in 1912 and held by the National/Country Party from its creation until 1977, over which time it became smaller and semi-urban. It has since been held for Labor by Joe Kruger until 1986, and Dean Wells thereafter. The closest result on Wells' watch came in 1998 when One Nation took second place ahead of the Liberals, scoring 45.0 per cent on two-party preferred. The Liberals recovered well here in 2004 after the 2001 debacle, picking up 14.3 per cent on the primary vote and 8.4 per cent on two-party preferred.
