THE POLL BLUDGER CLEVELAND
Cleveland is a coastal electorate in the southern suburbs, extending from Tingalpa Creek through Wellington Point to Cleveland and across the bay to Stradbroke Island. The electorate was created at the one-vote one-value redistribution that took effect at the 1992 election, at which it was won for Labor by Darryl Briskey, who had previously been the member for Redlands. Labor's closest shave here came in 1995, when the backlash against the Goss government cut the margin to 2.5 per cent. The Liberals picked up an encouraging 8.0 per cent swing in 2004 and would presumably have high hopes for a first-ever win now that Briskey is taking his personal vote into retirement. Their candidate Andrew Trim (right) was a medallist in canoeing events at the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympics, and is currently the principal of a Birkdale real estate agency. Labor candidate Phil Weightman (left) is a local police officer. ASSESSMENT: Labor retain | |
