Brisbane Central and its predecessor Brisbane (the "Central" was added in 1977) has been held by Labor for all times since its creation as a single-member electorate in 1912, except for one term after the 1974 landslide when it was won for the Liberals by Harold Lowes. Former ALP state secretary Peter Beattie became the member in 1989, going on to become party leader in February 1996 and Premier after the election of 13 June 1998. The Greens' vote in Brisbane Central rose healthily in 2004, from 6.9 per cent to 12.3 per cent, apparently at Beattie's expense – his primary vote was down from 64.8 per cent to 54.3 per cent, and there was a 5.4 per cent swing to the Liberals.
