THE POLL BLUDGER MELBOURNE
Self-explanatory Victorian electorate held safely for Labor since 1904, most notably by Arthur Calwell from 1940 to 1972. Its current dimensions are from the city west to the Maribyrnong River, north to Fitzroy North and Carlton North, and east to Clifton Hill and Richmond. The Greens have emerged as a theoretical threat in recent years, polling 15.8 per cent in 2001 and 19.0 per cent in 2004, but failing on either occasion to take second place from the Liberals. Lindsay Tanner became member in 1993, succeeding from Hawke-Keating government Immigration Minister Gerry Hand. | |
